TEAM

Lorraine Barratt

Hello!

I’m Lorraine and hopefully soon to be your English teacher and friend. I grew up in the Isles of Scilly, small islands off the coast of Cornwall in England and have been living in Switzerland for nearly 20 years now. In my free time I enjoy skiing, running, hiking with my dog, reading and playing Oboe. I am in two music groups in Egg und Mönchaltdorf. In my early career I trained as a dental nurse before qualifying as a nurse working in elderly care, head and neck surgery and burns. I then went on to pursue teaching and am TEFL, CELTA and Medical English qualified.

I enjoy getting to know my students and invite them to English themed events outside of the classroom. The relationship I have with my students is what ensures they enjoy the lessons and why they are so successful. My international medical experience ensures I can support anyone looking to improve their Medical English. I specialise in Business English and have taught students training for their Business English Certificate (BEC) exam privately and at KLZ Juventus, Interbrand and Swissgrid. I currently work at the KV Zurich Business School, whilst managing my holiday-let business Mariner’s House where I offer Residential English.

I have a passion for languages and speak:

  • English (Mother Tongue)
  • German (Fluent)
  • French (Fluent)
  • Spanish (Conversational)
  • Swiss German (Conversational)
  • Romanisch (Beginner)

Katja Faber

Welcome!

I’m very much looking forward to meeting you but first let me tell you a little about myself. I am Swiss and was born in Zurich, but lived for over 30 years in England, taking British nationality before returning to Zurich in 2000. I am an English lawyer (a barrister that represents clients in Court and wears a wig) and have also worked as a BBC journalist and editor at Time Out and Berlitz Guides. I work both in English and Spanish. In the last few years I have combined running my own agricultural business with English teaching, editorial work and language workshops.

I love sharing my passion for languages and encourage my students, both adults and teenagers, to explore the English language through learning about Britain’s customs, literature, politics and history. My lessons are tailor-made to suit your interests and your level of English so that we can progress in an enjoyable and light-hearted way. My advocacy skills as a barrister are a perfect basis for those wishing to practice and improve their Legal English or Public Speaking. I also offer short-term tuition, Translation & Editing, for those seeking support with business or university presentations, theses and Applications & Personal Statements in English.

My love for languages extends to:

  • English (Mother Tongue)
  • Spanish (Mother Tongue)
  • Swiss German (Fluent)
  • German (Fluent)
  • French and Italian (Conversational)

Translation & Editing

Whether you need editorial help for private matters or publications, I can help! I offer translation services from German to English and Spanish to English and substantial proofreading and editing of English text. Clients include companies, managers and private persons who have to ensure that their published material or web page is correct and engaging. Please contact me for a quote. Text is usually sent via email, unless clients prefer to use USB sticks sent via post for security reasons. An initial consultation is done over the phone making distance irrelevant. I have worked with clients in English speaking countries all over the world who require British English copy-writing and editing. Please contact me for a quote.

Legal English

The primary aim of the Legal English lessons is to analyse and practice English in a legal context and understand the different interpretations of legal concepts. The course will also include an explanation of English legal systems, breakdown of English legal and Court procedure, basic Contract law and terminology, or any other area of interest in the legal context. I use my legal experience and training, legal textbooks and journals to provide practical examples.

Public Speaking & Speech Writing

Public Speaking is an area of business or student life that is sadly often forgotten. I can help train your delivery pace, pronunciation, and content to keep your audience amused, focused and informed. Writing a good speech is hard, whether it be for a business conference or wedding, so work together with clients to create content and delivery that is pleasing, informative and to the point.

I am also well versed in speech writing. I will help you develop and enhance what might otherwise be a bland or repetitive speech due to your lack of English language skills or experience. Present yourself in the best light! Don’t let rusty, intermediate English stop you from making a great speech! We will work together on the content and delivery, thereby reducing stress and uncertainty whilst having fun.

Applications & Personal Statements

Please contact me for further information regarding college and university applications and personal statements. Usually, I meet prospective university students for 2 hours to better understand their requirements, and then organise subsequent follow-up 1 hour sessions to finalise their applications. The aim is to help the student present him/herself in the best light whilst at the same time ensuring that their ‘voice’ comes across in the statement.
